It didn’t take long for Mesa Air Group’s seemingly innocuous new code-share deal with United Airlines to raise far wider implications, as Mesa chairman and CEO Jonathan Ornstein last month launched a bid to spread his company’s influence beyond its already substantial breadth with an overture to buy Atlantic Coast Airlines.

A new 11-year code-share contract between Air Wisconsin and United Airlines went into full effect last month, after a U.S. bankruptcy court approved the terms of an MOU giving the Appleton, Wis.-based regional airline the authority to fly up to 17 more fifty-seat Bombardier CRJs as United Express. The deal also allows Air Wisconsin to continue United Express operations with its 17 BAe 146s through 2005.

Comair last month said it would ground 14 of its 50-seat Bombardier CRJs by the end of the year in step with a plan by parent company Delta Air Lines to cut its domestic capacity by 5 percent. The move will see the Cincinnati-based regional’s CRJ200 fleet shrink from 100 to 86 and its total complement of airplanes cut from 131 to 117.

Mesa Air Group plans to shed its Air Midwest subsidiary by the end of this year’s third quarter, company CEO Jonathan Ornstein said last month during the company’s quarterly earnings briefing.

Milwaukee-based Midwest Airlines announced last month that it will transfer all the routes now flown by its Skyway Airlines regional subsidiary to independent affiliate SkyWest Airlines. The transition will occur during March and April and involve the replacement of all 12 of Skyway’s Fairchild Dornier 328Jets with as many as eight SkyWest CRJ200s.
