Both Bombardier and Embraer announced cuts in regional jet production that will see next year’s CRJ200 output fall by 25 percent and total Embraer RJ deliveries by some 9 percent this year and 15 percent next year.
Bombardier last month delivered the first production example of its newest regional jet, the CRJ900, to Phoenix-based Mesa Air Group. Scheduled to fly for the first time under the America West Express livery on April 27 between Phoenix and Los Angeles, the 80-seat jet gives Mesa the largest-capacity aircraft in the U.S. regional airline business.
Mesa Air Group has hired celebrated attorney Daniel Petrocelli and asked for a new trial after U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Robert Faris ruled that Mesa must pay Hawaiian Airlines $80 million for misusing proprietary information it obtained during a failed attempt to participate in Hawaiian’s bankruptcy restructuring. Petrocelli, who represented the family of Ron Goldman in the civil trial against O.J.
Bombardier has decided to further increase production of its CRJ700 and CRJ900 regional jets to one aircraft every three days, the company announced today during a review of its third-quarter FY2008 financial results. In August Bombardier said it planned to boost the rate from this fiscal year’s 50 to 57 in FY09, but projections for further backlog growth have prompted the hike to 64 per year.
In an industry faced with escalating prices and increasingly long lead times for aircraft deliveries, Project Phoenix has joined a growing number of companies offering a program to convert Canadair CRJ200 regional jets into executive aircraft.
Phoenix-based Mesa Air Group and Raytheon Aircraft have come to terms on an agreement to resolve “outstanding issues” related to the bulk of the airline’s fleet of 19-seat Beech 1900Ds. Mesa, which had defaulted on its loans for 47 of the airplanes, has agreed to resume its payments to Raytheon in exchange for certain monetary concessions from the Wichita-based manufacturer.
Montreal-based Project Phoenix has joined a growing number of companies offering a program to convert used Bombardier CRJ200 regional jets into executive aircraft that each sell for about $18 million complete. Project Phoenix is a partner in the program with Aerospace Concepts of Montreal and Action Aviation of the UK.

The U.S. Bankruptcy Court District of Hawaii yesterday ruled in favor of Hawaiian Airlines in its lawsuit against Phoenix-based Mesa Air Group, awarding $80 million in damages and ordering Mesa to pay all of Hawaiian’s legal costs and “reasonable” lawyer fees. Hawaiian had asked for $173 million and an injunction barring Mesa from operating Go! for a year, a request Judge Robert Faris rejected.
