American Airlines returned to a full schedule today at St. Louis Lambert International Airport, now operating at some 90-percent capacity after a tornado hit Concourse C last Friday. The EF-4 tornado blew out a majority of windows and tore away sections of the concourse roof, forcing the airport to close and completely disrupting the operations of 11 airlines.
Miami International Airport
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) expects to issue a final rule designed to further consumer protections against tarmac delays of more than three hours and expand other passenger rights initiatives in April, a department spokesman told AIN this week.
Signature Flight Support’s Miami International Airport (MIA) base has a private hangar available, perfect for a large flight department, according to a company spokesman. The facility includes a 2,200-sq-ft departure lounge, 19,810-sq-ft hangar, covered parking and fuel discounts from the local and network Signature FBOs.
Hawker Beechcraft Beech 1900, Billings, Mont., May 23, 2008–The ATP-rated pilot of the Alpine Air Express Beech 1900 was killed when it crashed and exploded three miles northeast of Logan International Airport, two minutes after takeoff. The pilot was told to turn left to intercept Victor 187, but radar data showed the airplane started to turn right slowly.
Federal agents last month arrested six Venezuelan pilots and two ramp workers accused of using false immigration papers to obtain employment in the U.S. Two of the pilots, Pedro Agusti and Luis Garmendia, flew for American Airlines regional subsidiary American Eagle. Another pilot, Pedro Bottome, flew as a Citation X captain for Executive Jet Aviation.
Construction has begun on the new executive terminal at the Guardian Jet Center at Ontario International Airport, Ontario, Calif. The new terminal–which will have an expanded passenger lounge and a larger flight-planning area with real-time computer weather service–adds 5,500 sq ft of operating space to the company’s existing 46,000 sq ft of hangar and office area.
The Airport Authority of Washoe County (AAWC) in Nevada recently dedicated the Reno/Tahoe International Airport’s B concourse in honor of business jet pioneers Bill and Moya Lear. Now known as the Lear Concourse, the 11-gate complex will have an exhibit of historical artifacts from the Lear archives.
With construction under way on the new Dubai World Central airport, the existing Dubai International Airport (DXB) is continuing to grow, as planned, to allow it to be capable of handling 68 million pasengers in 2010, although current projections foresee an actual throughput of 50.8 million at that time (see chart). Here at the Dubai Air Show, the airport authority is unveiling a new logo and name.
Hesitant to “look a gift horse in the mouth,” Regional Airline Association president Debby McElroy applauded the Office of Management and Budget’s decision to allow bankrupt carriers, including RAA members Midway Airlines and Shuttle America, access to part of the $10 billion in loan guarantees signed into law as part of the Air Transportation Safety and System Stabilization Act.
