Some $10.1 million in direct government aid allowed Midway Airlines to reopen for business December 19, but its days as a regional/national hybrid operating Bombardier CRJs alongside its mainline jets appear to be over.
Morrisville, N.C.-based Midway Airlines’ plans to emerge from oblivion as a US Airways Express carrier appear to be derailed once again until at least January, while management scrambles to secure the financing needed for its proposed fleet of Bombardier CRJs. The bankrupt airline, grounded since mid-July, hoped to resume operations in October to provide feed for US Airways. The two airlines have now set a new target date of January 15.

The new discount-fare incarnation of Atlantic Coast Airlines known as Independence Air on June 16 launched revenue service with the first cadre of Bombardier CRJs reassigned from ACA’s soon-to-be-defunct United Express operation.
Mesa Air Group last month won the rights to the assets of bankrupt Midway Airlines after outbidding Connecticut-based investment firm Wexford Capital by some $550,000.
