Million Air Dallas at Addison Airport (ADS) has signed on as an Avfuel dealer. Jack Hopkins, president of Million Air Dallas, said the new affiliation would help the well-known and respected FBO maintain its level of service. Million Air said it will construct a 20,000-sq-ft FBO at its present site at Midway Airport, and plans for the new FBO have been presented to the city of Chicago. Upon approval, demolition of the current facility will begin, followed by construction of the new FBO. During the process of demolition and construction, modular offices and operations facilities will allow the FBO to continue serving customers.

In the official results of the 2008 AIN FBO Survey for the Americas, Caribbean and U.S. territories, Wilson Air Center in Memphis, Tenn., again tops the list, the only FBO with an overall average score of more than 9.00.

It seems that not a week goes by without an FBO company announcing either the acquisition of more FBOs or a one-FBO company buying half a dozen more FBOs to establish its own growing chain. Witness, for example, Volo Aviation’s rapid accumulation of five bases, when just last year the company had one FBO to supplement its primary charter business.

Houston-based REW Investments has acquired Million Air Interlink, the franchise company that controls 21 privately owned Million Air FBOs. REW president is Roger Woolsey, who owns the Million Air franchise at Houston Hobby Airport.

Maguire Aviation, which bought the former Petersen Aviation FBO at Van Nuys Airport in Southern California in 2006 and more recently the airport’s Million Air FBO, is planning to buy Skytrails Aviation, an FBO on the southeast corner of the airport. After the deal closes, Maguire’s total spending on leasehold acquisitions and infrastructure improvements at Van Nuys should reach more than $250 million during the next three years.

The former Million Air Nassau is now Odyssey Aviation, having left the Million Air franchise system. “This change to a new brand represents our realization of a dream to own and operate our own brand,” said general manager William Holowesko. Odyssey Aviation is also moving away from the FBO label, instead calling itself a flight service provider. “The reason for this is simple,” he explained.

Among flight attendants, flight crews and schedulers and dispatchers, not to mention passengers, few subjects today are likely to elicit more heated discussion than the business aviation catering industry. The conversations generally cover the same issues: allegations of price gouging, the growing practice by FBOs of charging a handling fee for catering, worries about security and concerns over food safety.

FBO chain Encore acquired Million Air Cleveland at Burke Lakefront Airport early last month. This brings the Encore FBO chain to five facilities in the U.S. and three in Europe. Like some of Encore’s other recent acquisitions, the Cleveland FBO also offers engine and airframe maintenance in addition to typical FBO services such as fuel sales and hangar rental.
