Located approximately 25 nm northwest of downtown Detroit and 12 sm from DaimlerChrysler’s North American headquarters, Oakland County International Airport (PTK), aka Pontiac, has become to Detroit what Scottsdale is to Phoenix–the premier corporate aviation airport in the area. With three runways, the longest at 6,200 feet, Pontiac can accommodate aircraft up to the size of Boeing 757s.
Ross Aviation and Centre Partners have announced their entry into the FBO market with the acquisition of Denver Air at Jefferson County Airport in Broomfield, Colo.
At the end of last month, Macquarie Bank of Sydney, Australia, entered into an agreement to purchase Executive Air Support, the Dallas-based group whose sole business is Atlantic Aviation. The transaction is valued at US$238 million. Combined with the five FBO AvCenters already owned by Macquarie, the deal for the 10 FBOs will triple the number of Macquarie-owned aircraft-service operations in the U.S.
Next year a new Million Air FBO is slated to open at San Bernardino International Airport in California. Construction is scheduled to begin in December. Million Air San Bernardino is being built on the northwest corner of the airport and features a 32,000-sq-ft hangar, a 40,000-sq-ft executive terminal and support facility and 10 acres of ramp space. The FBO’s fuel farm will be completed after the FBO is finished.
Ken Allison, owner of a growing chain of Million Air FBOs, has added a seventh facility to his stable, Million Air Charleston at South Carolina’s Charleston International Airport. Groundbreaking for the new Million Air FBO facility took place last year, and the facility opened late last month. The new FBO offers a spacious atrium lobby, technologically advanced conference rooms and separate entrances and shop space for based customers.
Million Air president and CEO Roger Woolsey and partner FlyingGroup celebrated the opening of the Million Air FBO at Paris Le Bourget Airport. FlyingGroup is a European charter/management and handling company with bases in Paris and Antwerp and will continue to operate its charter/management business at the new Million Air FBO at Le Bourget.

Old favorites and new names earned high ratings in this year’s AIN FBO Survey Top 40 list. The many facilities that had tie scores this year might indicate that FBOs continue to improve in the four ratings categories: line service, passenger amenities, pilot amenities and facilities. Wilson Air Center’s Memphis, Tenn. base, once again, tops the list, followed by AirFlite, Long Beach, Calif., up from number three last year.
“You have to work at it every day. The changes don’t come in waves, but in tiny increments,” Philippe Crevier said about the FBO business. He spoke to AIN on his cellphone from his family’s vacation house.
The state of Louisiana has approved Million Air’s plans to build a new FBO terminal at Lakefront Airport in New Orleans. The airport suffered debilitating damage during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and Million Air lost most of its buildings except for the historic 1930s-era Moffett Hangar, which has since been restored. Groundbreaking should take place this month.
