The FAA has given the green light to AAR for its new aircraft maintenance facility in Duluth, Minn. The addition of the Duluth facility increases AAR’s worldwide aircraft maintenance capacity by approximately 10 percent. Duluth joins AAR facilities in Indianapolis; Oklahoma City; Miami; and Hot Springs, Ark., as part of the company’s nationwide “1MRO” network.
Signature TechnicAir has appointed Dan Henchal as director of maintenance for its facilities at Charles B Wheeler Airport (Kansas City, Mo.) and at New Century Air Center Airport (Olathe, Kan.). Previously, Henchal worked at the Signature TechnicAir facility at St. Paul Downtown Airport.
AAR has signed a letter of intent with the city of Duluth, Minn., to reopen the maintenance facility previously operated by Northwest Airlines.
Sometimes simple is better. That’s the philosophy Connecticut-based aviation services provider Key Air heeded when it designed its FBO at Minnesota’s Anoka County-Blaine Airport (ANE), near Minneapolis. In deference to local aesthetics the company avoided the use of shiny chrome and marble, relying instead on wood, stone and brick.
Minnesota has designated October as General Aviation Appreciation Month, becoming the 17th state in the past year to issue an official declaration in support of the industry.
Fargo Jet Center’s major remodeling and expansion is finished. The North Dakota FBO added a dramatic two-story stone fireplace to the lobby fronting a wide expanse of windows facing the ramp. New features also include a pilot’s suite with high-definition television, flight-planning room, quiet room and conference room.
The NTSB is investigating the October 25 crash of a chartered King Air A100 (N41BE) that killed Sen. Paul Wellstone (D-Minn.), his wife and a daughter, along with three staff members and the two pilots. The twin turboprop, reportedly chartered from Executive Aviation/Aviation Charter Inc.
Cirrus Design late last year struck a deal with the Duluth, Minn. Economic Development Authority to move its single-engine jet research and development activity to a former Northwest Airlines maintenance hangar adjacent to its headquarters at Duluth Airport. The authority on December 27 passed a resolution of intent to lease the 189,000-sq-ft facility to Cirrus for 25 years, with an option for 25 more.
The NTSB is eyeing fatigue as a contributing factor in the October 25 accident that killed Sen. Paul Wellstone (D-Minn.), members of his family and staff and both pilots. The King Air A100 crashed two miles from the airport during an approach to the Eveleth-Virginia (Minn.) Airport (EVM). Wellstone had chartered the aircraft from St. Paul-based Aviation Charter.
Family members of the late Sen. Paul Wellstone (D-Minn.) and five other passengers who were killed in the October 25 crash of a King Air A100 reached a $25 million agreement with the charter company that operated the twin turboprop, averting a likely lawsuit against Aviation Charter of Eden Prairie, Minn. The King Air crashed during an approach in poor visibility (AIN, January, page 10).
