The FCC has approved AirCell’s air-to-ground frequency license, clearing the way for the Louisville, Colo. company to begin rolling out the ground infrastructure to support its new broadband communications service.
Satellite communications service provider Satcom Direct gave live demonstrations of Inmarsat’s broadband global area network (BGAN) land mobile technology at last month’s NBAA Convention. The precursor to the aviation-specific SwiftBroadband data service, BGAN provides a satellite link to users at speeds equivalent to a DSL connection.
Live tv over the ocean? It’s not possible today, and traditional direct broadcast satellite television providers are unlikely to have a business model for such services anytime soon. But Boeing and Rockwell Collins do.
If the customer has it in his home or in his office, he wants it in the cabin of his business aircraft. This demand is driving the communication and entertainment cabin technology that’s just become available and the new gear soon to follow.
A major battle for market share is going on in the realm of cabin communications, in
particular high-speed satcom data connectivity.
