After several years of cost reductions, layoffs, closings and general malaise, there are definite signs that a slow economic recovery is starting to have a positive effect on the business aviation industry, and many in the interior completion and refurbishment business are breathing a sigh of relief.
Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport
Three-month-old interiors, mods and maintenance shop Montreal Jet Center is preparing to accept its first business jet for interior refurbishment and airframe maintenance. Its Trudeau International Airport facility in Quebec is a consortium of aviation companies, including DEM Capital, a specialist in aircraft maintenance and refurbishment, and Elisen Technologies, an aeronautics engineering firm certified as a design approval organization.
Hawker 600, Bromont Airport, Montreal, Feb. 21, 2005–Scott Aviation’s Hawker 600 N21SA landed 300 feet left of Runway 5L at Bromont Airport, in the Eastern Townships, near Montreal, and spun around on its belly. Both pilots and a passenger were injured; three passengers were unharmed. The flight was at night and the Unicom operator noted that the runway lights were not working.
Next month Montreal will host the 45th annual Canadian Business Aviation Association (CBAA) convention (June 13 to 15). The static display is to be held at the Skyservice Aviation FBO at Pierre-Elliot-Trudeau International Airport (formerly Dorval) and the event’s seminars and social functions are to be staged at the downtown Queen Elizabeth Hotel.
Innotech Aviation has served the corporate aviation market since the dawn of the business jet era. “This is our 50th year, and that’s a long time in aviation,” Kirk Rowe, the company’s executive vice president and COO, told AIN. “We have a long history with Cessna, Raytheon, Bombardier and other OEMs that’s allowed us to build substantial technical depth and product line knowledge.”
People fly on general aviation aircraft because they can go where they want to, when they want to. It stands to reason that you don’t hear much about trips to the Gulf Coast of Texas in mid-summer (not voluntary ones, anyway) or trips to northern Canadian lake regions for the traditional February school vacation week.
Bombardier Aerospace has named Montreal’s Innotech Aviation, a division of IMP Group, a preferred completion center for the Global XRS and Global 5000.
In 1980 Innotech was the first company Bombardier named an authorized service facility for the Challenger. The company is also an authorized service facility and modification center for the Global Express.
Innotech-Execaire has selected On-Board Data Systems (OBDS) as its partner for software and services in support of a fleet-wide electronic flight bag (EFB) upgrade the Montreal-based companies announced last month. As part of the agreement OBDS will design software allowing online delivery of electronic chart updates directly to the EFB units in the cockpit.
