Sagem, part of France’s Safran Group, and Germany’s MTU Aero Engine have formed a 50-50 joint venture company for equipment control software and hardware. Dubbed Aerospace Embedded Solutions (AES), the new company will provide “safety-critical” products for military and civil aviation with applications including engines, landing gear and thrust reversers.

International Aero Engines (IAE) will continue to build V2500 turbofans well beyond the middle of the next decade and production rates will continue to climb, according to president and CEO Ian Aitken.
Rolls-Royce plans to sell its equity and program shares in IAE to Pratt & Whitney for $1.5 billion as part of a restructuring that would see the two companies enter a new partnership to develop an engine to power a future midsize aircraft.
Germany’s MTU Aero Engines has finished building the first high-speed, low-pressure turbine for Pratt & Whitney’s PurePower PW1524G, the engine destined for the Bombardier C Series aircraft.
Going against the common practice of replacing rather than repairing, MTU Aero Engines has teamed with General Electric to make repairs more cost effective for the operator. “It is common for maintenance facilities to use new parts to replace worn or damaged ones, but we prefer to repair. Our technicians can restore even heavily worn components to as-good-as-new condition,” said Dr.
German-based engine manufacturer MTU Aero Engines is here at the Paris Air Show (Hall 2 Stand AB 151) exhibiting a cutaway mockup of a geared turbofan. This is the basic concept for its Claire (clean air engine) technology program, whose aim is to cut carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 30 percent by 2035. It is making its first step under the umbrella of the European Commission’s Clean Sky joint technology initiative.
Researchers across Europe have made substantial progress in their pursuit of the cleaner, more fuel efficient engines that will be needed if air traffic is to continue growing without its environmental impact becoming unacceptable.
Nine contracts worth more than $630 million were awarded to MTU Maintenance last November. “The deals we made again demonstrate that amid a difficult economic environment, MTU remains competitive and well positioned,” commented Egon Behle, CEO of MTU Aero Engines. The agreements signed in part are long-term, up to 10-year arrangements covering V2500, CF6 and PW2000 engines. They come mostly from the U.S. and Europe.
Germany’s MTU Aero Engines has taken an 18 percent stake in the GE38 turboshaft engine powering the Sikorsky CH-53 Super Stallion heavylift helicopter, marking its first entry into a U.S. military engine program. Under the agreement, MTU, which has previously manufactured components only for U.S. military engines, will have responsibility for the power turbine module.
The biggest engine deal of Farnborough 2002 was undoubtedly FedEx’s selection of the Engine Alliance’s GP7200 engines to power its 10 A380 cargo megaliners. Though the value of the contract was not disclosed, it gives the Pratt & Whitney/General Electric joint venture parity in the A380 powerplant race with its Rolls-Royce rival.
