Responding to a request from Boeing, the FAA has extended the comment deadline from February 13 to April 16 on its proposal amending digital flight data recorder (DFDR) regulations of Parts 121 and 135 to prohibit “filtering” of signals. During several accident investigations, the NTSB found that some DFDRs were filtering signals before they were recorded.
More details have emerged about the November 5 fatal crash of Citation N505K following a loss of control on takeoff at Hobby Airport in Houston. The 55-year-old owner-pilot and his 37-year-old maintenance technician were killed in the accident.
The NTSB final report on the May 2005 crash of a Mitsubishi MU-2B-25 in Hillsboro, Ore., found several causes, notably mishandling a power loss due to a lack of recent flight experience and recurrent training by the pilot. While flight logs provided by the family showed more than 500 hours operating an MU-2, the pilot’s last flight before the accident flight was 14 years earlier.
The NTSB last week issued a scathing report highly critical of both the FAA and the transport-helicopter industry for not embracing flight-data recorders.
At the NBAA Convention in October, international design giant Gianni Versace of Milan previewed a number of exclusive Versace Design signature pieces for business jet cabin interiors. Earlier this year, Versace announced a partnership with TAG Group, parent company of TAG Aviation, to create an exclusive interior design service for owners of private jets.
In part because of two-high profile fatal crashes–one involving eight federal government employees and the other a U.S. senator–the National Transportation Safety Board held two days of hearings in late July on its recommendations that a cockpit image recorder (CIR) be installed in nearly all turbine-powered aircraft.
A Tri-Coastal Airlines Metro crashed in a “nose-down, near-vertical attitude” near Paris, Tenn., while on a cargo flight from Dayton, Ohio, to Harlingen, Texas, on February 8. The sole-occupant pilot was killed.

Ten years ago this month our aviation community suffered its second major hull loss in two months. On the heels of the ValuJet Douglas DC-9 crash in Florida, a 747-100 operating as TWA Flight 800 from New York to Paris entered a rapid descent after takeoff from Kennedy Airport and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean more than 10 miles south of Long Island on July 17, 1996.
