Business aircraft crews and passengers are generally aware of the danger of prolonged exposure to noise in terms of hearing loss. Now there is a growing body of evidence that prolonged exposure to a combination of high-intensity and low-frequency noise may pose far more serious health threats.
The FAA is reviewing an FAR Part 150 noise-compatibility proposal for Little Rock National Airport, Ark., and expects to approve or disapprove the plan no later than July 21. A federal district court in California has indicted Jeffrey Borer and Arvel Reeves on conspiracy and other charges related to secretly recorded conversations between entertainer Michael Jackson and his attorney while on a chartered Gulfstream IISP flight from Las Vegas to Santa Barbara, Calif., on Nov. 20, 2003.
Tim Travis, media relations manager for Raytheon Aircraft, died December 9. He was 46. Travis joined the corporate communications department at Raytheon Aircraft in 1997. He is survived by his wife, Nancy, four children, his parents, two sisters, two step-brothers and a step-sister. A memorial fund has been established with the Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Sedgwick County, 219 N. St. Francis, Wichita, KS 67202.
The FAA is concerned that some noise-canceling headsets might prevent pilots from hearing audible alarms, abnormal engine noise or other mechanical sounds. The agency, in a January 1 Information for Operators (InFO 07001), said noise attenuation of headsets “may vary by make and model” and if these sounds cannot be detected “discontinue the use of noise-canceling headsets.”
All jet and transport-category airplanes (those with an mtow of 12,500 pounds or more) for which application of a new type design is submitted on or after January 1 this year have to meet new noise certification levels. Stage 4 is a cumulative 10 EPNdB (effective perceived noise level in decibels) less than Stage 3 limits. Virtually all in-production business jets will qualify to be recertified under Stage 4.
The “Flipper” from Flight Display Systems of Alpharetta, Ga., fits into that welcomed category of products that fill a need without breaking the bank.
The thin, five-inch LCD screen is designed to mount to the underside of the glareshield, staying out of the way when not in use and flipping down when needed. It’s intended to serve as an extra display screen in cockpits where space is limited.
French aerospace research agency Onera (Stand A321) is exploring a new way to cut noise inside the cabin of an airplane. Researchers have used a principle that simply is the reverse of the usual one.
UK aircraft maker Britten-Norman has reached a pay settlement with members of the Amicus trade union. In a deal struck on October 9, the Isle of Wight-based manufacturer reached an agreement with its workforce on pay and other issues, ending a strike that had begun three days earlier. Company and union officials had started to negotiate new terms in January. Britten-Norman makes the Islander line of piston- and turbine-powered aircraft.
