Kongsberg and Raytheon announced a teaming agreement this week to develop and market the Norwegian company’s JSM (joint strike missile) for the air-launched OASuW (offensive anti-surface warfare) mission.

Last month Raytheon and Kongsberg conducted the first firing of the Evolved Sea Sparrow missile (ESSM) from the NASAMS (Norwegian advanced surface-to-air missile system). The June 24 firing at Norway’s Andøya Rocket Range not only validated the ability to fire the ESSM with the system, but also the ability to integrate an older-generation Hawk high-power illuminator into the system.

Finland is the latest customer for Raytheon and Kongsberg’s National Advanced Surface to Air Missile System (NASAMS), following Norway, the Netherlands, Spain and the U.S. NASAMS is a networked air defense system that includes Raytheon’s MPQ-64F1 Sentinel radar and the surface-launched version of the AIM-120 AMRAAM. NASAMS was developed in the 1990s, and is now in its NASAMS II configuration, as first delivered to Norway in 2007.
