German aviation and electronic system house ESG has proposed a new Israeli SIGINT aircraft as a replacement for Germany’s cancelled Euro Hawk SIGINT UAV. ESG displayed a large model of IAI-Elta’s conversion of the Bombardier Global 5000 business jet on its stand at the ILA Berlin airshow this week. The Luftwaffe has been told to evaluate five alternatives to the Euro Hawk, but this is the only one that would abandon development of the Integrated Signals Intelligence System (ISIS) SIGINT that Airbus Defence & Space was developing for the Euro Hawk.

The first UAV Payloads conference will be held in London on June 24 and 25 with a focus on capabilities such as SIGINT/EW (signals intelligence/electronic warfare) and search and rescue, as well as applications involving electro-optical/infra-red (EO/OR) sensors for medium- and high-altitude long endurance (MALE and HALE) aircraft.

Lawmakers finally received a response to questions about U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) searches of general aviation aircraft on domestic flights, but they remain unsatisfied. The response came from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the umbrella federal agency that includes CBP. Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) received a letter and a table reporting more details about some of the incidents, but Roberts and Sen. Jim Risch (R-Idaho) were not fully satisfied and sent a letter on February 12 requesting a briefing and more written responses from the DHS.

The Elta subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries (Booth P39) has added an electronic intelligence (Elint) capability to its ELM-2060 synthetic-aperture radar reconnaissance pod. The pod fits on the centerline of fighters from almost any origin, and has already been sold to a number of customers worldwide.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has issued a final rule covering repair station security. “This action brings an end to the Federal Aviation Administration [FAA] ban on certifying new foreign repair stations,” according to the Aeronautical Repair Station Association (Arsa).

The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) last month opened the first of 300 planned application centers for its “Pre-Check” expedited screening program, which allows members to pass through airport security checkpoints without removing their shoes, laptop computers and other personal items. The agency expects the centers to boost enrollment in Pre-Check; previously the program covered mainly airline frequent fliers and travelers enrolled in the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency’s Global Entry program.
