L-3 Communications has confirmed plans to more than double the size of its Mobius optionally manned aircraft. The new version will be 140 percent larger to allow for a two-seat manned configuration. The second seat can be occupied by a second pilot and/or sensor operator.

The existing development model has a maximum takeoff weight of 3,000 pounds and a wingspan of almost 27 feet.

Elbit Systems of Haifa, Israel, announced the first export sale of its Hermes 900 unmanned aerial system to a “Latin American country,” identified by various sources as Chile. The number of systems and air vehicles to be supplied is unspecified, but the contract includes ground control stations and sensors, including the DCoMPASS (digital compact multi-purpose advanced stabilized system) and radar systems.

Congressman John Mica keeps ratcheting up his war against the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which he shoulders the blame for creating in the aftermath of 9/11. And judging from anti-TSA sentiments at the recent National Air Transportation Association Air Charter Summit, he probably can enlist a lot of spearchuckers to help win the battle.

The French company launched the Sentinel 100L in 2008 as a ruggedized, self-contained system secured to the landing gear that requires no retrofit or modification of the aircraft.

The Republican chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee makes no secret of his desire to rid TSA of its nearly 50,000 transportation security officers (aka screeners).

A trio of California congressmen have drafted legislation they hope will allow Bob Hope Burbank Airport and Van Nuys Airport to adopt operations curfews. The Valley-Wide Noise Relief Act seeks to exempt the two airports from the 1990 Airport Noise and Capacity Act (ANCA), which has prevented them from adopting comprehensive nighttime bans.

The Middle East is included in the U.S. government’s broadened export targets...

In a significant move, the U.S. government has cleared an unarmed version of the Predator UAV for wider export, including to the Middle East. Until now, the Predator and Reaper series has been exported only to the UK and Italy, and offered to a few other U.S. allies. Long-endurance UAVs are included in the Missile Technology Control Regime (MCTR), a voluntary 34-nation agreement.
