Construction of the new FlightSafety International (FSI) Learning Center at Farnborough Airport in the UK neared completion last month. The first of up to 14 flight simulators have arrived and are due to be installed over the next few weeks, with a view toward seating students for the first training sessions in May and June.

Midcoast Aviation in St. Louis last month was busy installing the first Teledyne Iridium Units (TIU) in Challenger 604s operated by Boeing’s executive flight department. Designed for use with MagnaStar air-to-ground telephone systems, the TIU from Teledyne Controls allows buyers to use their existing MagnaStar handsets to place voice and data calls anywhere in the world.

The FAA received a fair number of comprehensive comments during the 30-day comment period for the proposed special regulations (SFAR) that will mandate type-specific training in the Mitsubishi MU-2. The comment period ended October 30, and 72 comments reside in the agency’s docket.

A spate of crashes that led the FAA to propose mandatory pilot training requirements for the Mitsubishi MU-2 galvanized Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.) into action. Representing constituents Jim and Linda Presba, whose son was killed in a Dec. 10, 2004, MU-2 crash near Centennial, Colo., Tancredo launched an effort to force the FAA to ground the MU-2.

Although the FAA allowed only 30 days for comments on the proposed Special FAR mandating Mitsubishi MU-2 pilot training, 72 comments were submitted to the docket. The SFAR will require all MU-2 pilots to obtain initial/transition, requalification, recurrent and/or differences training.

QinetiQ’s radar system that can detect very small items of potentially dangerous debris on airport runways has just completed a successful demonstration at Dubai International Airport. Called Tarsier, the all-weather, 24/7 system performed fully automatic detection and location of test debris items such as plastic and glass bottles, metal bolts and a small section of carbon fiber grill.
