As of the middle of May, the FAA had yet to determine if it will renew its mandatory VFR helicopter route along the north shore of New York’s Long Island. The controversial North Shore Route was established for voluntary compliance in 2008 as a response to residential noise complaints and political prodding from elected officials, including U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y), who pressed then Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and the FAA to make it mandatory.
In an age when general aviation airports are under attack as sources of unwanted noise, Cannes-Mandelieu Airport on France’s Mediterranean coast has reached an accommodation with its neighbors. Just four years ago Côte d’Azur residents were threatening to shut the airport down.
Arinc Direct announced today that it has added standardized airport noise abatement procedures to its product suite for flight planning, thanks to an agreement with FlightRisk and Whispertrack. As such, the company’s flight-planning suite now includes noise-abatement procedures for more than 22 North American airports, including Teterboro, N.J., and Oakland and Santa Monica, Calif. Arinc Direct claims it is the first flight-planning service to provide this data as standard information for its operators.
As part of its good-neighbor program, Westchester County Airport (HPN) in White Plains, N.Y., presented its annual Spirit of Noise Abatement awards at an environmental event organized by the Westchester Aviation Association at the end of May. Since 1994 the program has honored those business aircraft operators who have abided by the airport’s noise-reduction policies during the previous year.
At a ceremony held at Westchester County Airport (HPN) in New York, airport administrators and local operator groups announced the 2007 and 2008 winners of the airport’s Spirit of Noise Abatement Awards.
Van Nuys Airport last month introduced a draft environmental impact report for the proposed Noisier Aircraft Phaseout Project. The preliminary plan calls for establishing a maximum noise level for arriving and departing aircraft at Van Nuys, beginning with a phase-out of aircraft generating noise levels of 77 dBA or more on departure.
The Los Angeles board of airport commissioners, the agency that oversees several airports in the metropolitan area, announced last month it was suing charter operator Pacific Jet. The suit involves what the board called Pacific Jet’s “repeated noise violations” at Van Nuys Airport (VNY).
When an airport considers environmental impact on neighbors, noise is usually the top concern, but dealing with water- and air-pollution issues is becoming a more important part of the mix. At an environmental symposium held at Westchester County Airport (HPN) in White Plains, N.Y., on October 17, there was good news on the anti-noise front.
Last October and November, a procession of UPS Boeing 767s experimented with a new type of approach to their home base at Louisville International Airport (SDF), Ky. The technique is called the continuous descent approach (CDA). The results of the test flights were released earlier this year and could lead to steeper approach paths nationwide in the name of noise abatement and fuel economy.
The FAA last week issued the final environmental impact statement for the New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia airspace redesign, a major project that seeks to reduce delays in and out of the New York and Philadelphia metropolitan areas.
