Landmark Aviation’s FBO at Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO) in Greensboro, N.C., has seen an increase in business since its opening in May following a $2 million renovation, according to the facility’s general manager. The remodeling effort encompassed structural changes to the building and introduced a new more spacious passenger lounge, VIP lounge, a new bistro and a conference room.

Honda Aircraft Company announced late last month that it completed the first flight of an FAA-conforming HondaJet. The light jet took off for a ­51-minute flight on December 20, from the company’s ­headquarters facility at Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro, N.C.

Hawker Beechcraft C90A, Mount Airy, N.C., Feb. 1, 2008–The King Air, operating under Part 91, was attempting to land in rain and fog following an instrument approach to Mount Airy/Surry County Airport when witnesses saw it break out of the clouds at approximately 500 feet agl and descend rapidly and fly parallel to the runway before making a hard left turn into the fog.

Last spring, Honda Aircraft (Booth No. 5394) brought a new cabin mockup of its twinjet to the European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (EBACE). Here at NBAA’09, the Greensboro, N.C.-based manufacturer is showing its HondaJet prototype and a fuselage mockup in its exhibit.

Landmark Aviation and the Asheville Regional Airport Authority celebrated the grand opening of the FBO chain’s FBO terminal at Asheville Regional Airport in North Carolina on April 16. Landmark spent $4.6 million on the new facility, which features a 23,000-sq-ft hangar, pilot’s lounge, flight planning room and conference room. Landmark has 41 FBOs in the U.S., Canada and Europe and is owned by GTCR Golder Rauner and Platform Partners.

A spokesman for Honda R&D Americas has revealed that the company expects to begin flight tests “soon” of its new light jet–the HondaJet–at its facilities at Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro, N.C. The light twinjet, he said, will be powered by a turbofan designed and built by Honda, but beyond that he declined to comment.

Seeing the North Carolina state flag hoisted in an exhibit at a major international air show isn’t all that surprising considering that the area is home to more than 160 aerospace companies and has attracted hundreds of million of dollars worth of major contracts in the last two years.
