The Department of Transportation’s Office of the Inspector General (IG) this week will begin an audit of the FAA’s progress at reducing the fatal accident rate of helicopters operating as emergency medical service (HEMS) transports. The FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 required the FAA to take specific actions to reduce the HEMS accident rate, including short-term safety initiatives to promote the use of advanced technology, such as night vision equipment.

The FAA talks a lot about the importance of safety management systems. It has several web pages dedicated to SMS. Newsletters dedicated to SMS. And employees certainly talk it up at internal and external meetings. But talk is cheap, as we all know.

The Air Charter Association of North America (Acana) convened its fourth annual charter broker forum here at NBAA 2013 on Tuesday, focusing on the Department of Transportation’s (DOT’s) recent Notice of Proposed Rule Making (NPRM) aimed at regulating the charter broker industry.

The Air Charter Association of North America (Acana) will hold an open forum on Tuesday at the NBAA Convention in Las Vegas to discuss the U.S. DOT’s recently published proposal to regulate aircraft charter brokers. The two-hour session will be held at 3 p.m.

The U.S. Department of Transportation issued a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) yesterday that would regulate “air charter brokers.” The agency says it is undertaking this action “to protect consumers, ensuring that consumers of single-entity charter air transportation have adequate information about the operator of chartered aircraft and enumerating certain prohibited unfair and deceptive practices by air taxis and commuter air carriers.”

Insitu ScanEagle

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration expects that energy company ConocoPhillips will make the first commercial flight of an unmanned aircraft today. Under a restricted category type certification the FAA awarded in July, ConocoPhillips will launch an Insitu ScanEagle from the research vessel Westward Wind in the Chukchi Sea, part of the Arctic Ocean west of Alaska.

The FAA is seeking responses to a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) that it believes will significantly improve operational flexibility for operators using an enhanced flight vision system (EFVS). Comments on FAA-2013-0485 are due by September 9.
