The Greater Rockford Airport Authority has reached an agreement with Chicago-based AAR to build a new hangar facility on the Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD). The 200,000-sq-ft MRO facility is expected to employ up to 500 people and expands RFD’s current service offerings and infrastructure.

Flight crews headed for Chicago Midway Airport (MDW) should pay special attention to the new Rnav (GPS) Z Runway 22L approach published February 6. The new procedure could increase the potential for conflict with smaller general aviation aircraft traveling along Lake Michigan’s western shoreline. The new RNP/GPS procedure will bring traffic across Chicago’s lakeshore just south of the downtown buildings for a straight-in to 22L.

The so-called polar vortex that descended into the U.S. this week has wreaked havoc with airline schedules, according to statistics from industry data tracking service FlightAware. Airlines on Monday canceled 4,590 flights within, into or out of the U.S., while delays totaled 8,064. The Obama administration and the U.S. Congress appear headed to a confrontation over the administration’s plan to open a customs pre-clearance facility at Abu Dhabi International Airport that many lawmakers and airline industry groups oppose. NetJets “soft opened” its new 10,000-sq-ft dedicated passenger terminal solely for the fractional provider’s customers at Palm Beach (Fla.) A formal grand opening is scheduled for November 6, but AIN was able to get a first look at the new complex just before the NBAA Convention this week.
As the City of Chicago finishes work before the official October 17 opening of the new Runway 10C/28C at O’Hare International Airport (ORD), control tower manager Robert Flynn released operational data of use to flight crews. Runway 10C/28C will be a Design Group VI surface 10,801 feet long by 200 feet wide. Its accelerate-stop distance available (ASDA) will be 10,540 feet, as will its landing distance available (LDA). Aircraft instructed to land on Runway 10C and hold short (LAHSO) of taxiway “GG” will find 9,610 feet of runway remaining.
The ATC committee of the Chicago Area Business Aviation Association (CABAA) can chalk up another win for local flight crews when a series of new IFR departure procedures for Chicago satellite airports take effect on October 17.
Plans to expand the main runway at Chicago’s third commercial airport have hit another delay. The latest estimate now places completion in September next year.
