The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has restricted takeoff and landing weight for all international airlines flying widebodies to Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) to 196 metric tons (432,102 pounds) through September 30. The decision is a result of safety concerns following repeated cracks on the 46-year-old runway.

The control tower manager at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (KORD) published an airport notice effective August 19 that reminds pilots of locations where tower controllers are unable to see their aircraft after a “line up and wait” instruction is issued. These include the intersections of Runway 10L and Taxiway DD, Runway 32L and Taxiway T10, Runway 14L and Taxiway U2 and Runway 28R and Taxiway EE.
Construction began recently on the south satellite control tower building at Chicago O’Hare International Airport. The facility is to monitor traffic that will primarily use the airport’s new Runway 28L/10R, which is to open in the fall of 2015. The top of the tower-cab antennas will rise 219 feet agl, with the controller’s-eye-view inside the cab set at 194 feet agl. The $28 million facility is expected to operate from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. local time.
The confrontation over the development of a new FBO at San Jose, Calif., has taken another twist with the announcement that Atlantic Aviation filed a pair of lawsuits against the City of San Jose for its decision to award a 50-year FBO lease to a partnership between Signature Flight Support and Blue City Holdings, a corporation that represents the personal aircraft of the principals of Google, headquartered nearby in Mountain View.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration on Tuesday announced a series of “traffic management initiatives” at airports and other facilities around the country as a result of employee furloughs due to the government’s automatic budget cuts known as sequestration. The agency warned travelers to expect a wide range of delays that will change throughout the day depending on staffing and weather.
Officials at Chicago-area DuPage Airport announced the completion of a months-long project to extend the length of its secondary runway by 1,343 feet, to 6,443 feet, allowing it to accommodate the largest corporate jets and bizliners such as the BBJ and ACJ. The $3.5 million project was funded entirely by the airport authority.
All taxiways at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) once identified by a “Z” prefix have been eliminated as the City of Chicago continues toward the May 2, 2013 renaming of Runway 10-28. That runway will become 10L-28R in advance of this fall’s opening of the new Runway 10C-28C. ORD taxiways will now be identified with double letters such as “DD” or “GG.”
The FAA has announced a number of taxiway changes at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). The changes, which became effective last week, rename taxiways “ZC” as “AA,” “ZD” as “L1,” “ZE” as “BB” and “ZF” as “CC.” Looking ahead, the FAA reminded users that on May 2 Runway 10-28 will be redesignated Runway 10L-28R as the City of Chicago prepares to open the airport’s new south Runway 10R-28L later this year.
Canada’s Transportation Safety Board (TSB) has released a new video to call attention to the hazards of runway incursions, which the Board recently identified as one of the country’s top nine transportation hazards. The TSB recorded more than 4,100 incursions between 2001 and 2009. Incident numbers increased 27 percent between 2010 and 2011 alone, from 351 to 446, respectively, since runway incursions were placed on the TSB’s watch list in 2010.
Venice Airport on Florida’s Gulf Coast stands out among the 40 or so fields that received FAA Airport Improvement Program grants totaling more than $260 million in August. It’s not because Venice is a bastion of business aviation activity–the field is lucky to see six bizjet movements per day–nor did it receive the largest ($32.9 million) or smallest ($791,000) grant.
