GE Aviation expects this month to fly the Passport engine that will power Bombardier’s Global 7000 and 8000. GE has shipped the first complete engine to Victorville, Calif., where it is about to be fitted to one of the company’s two Boeing 747 flying testbeds.
More than 100 hours of testing on a full-scale PW1000G PurePower engine core has so far validated Pratt & Whitney's performance goals for its new generation of commercial jet engines, the company announced today. The core has also demonstrated “excellent” starting and operability characteristics, according to Pratt & Whitney.
Pratt & Whitney has announced upgrades to both its venerable JT8D engine and the PW4000 high bypass ratio turbofan. Improvements to the JT8D are aimed at enabling the engine to meet the latest ICAO Chapter 4 noise rules, which took effect in January. A noise-reducing kit will, says the company, provide a solution to operators of MD-80s wishing to avoid landing charges levied because of excessive noise.
