Heli-Expo 2014 brings big news for Idaho-based Aviation Specialties Unlimited (Booth No. 802). On the heels of its announcement that the company has completed its 800th night vision cockpit modification, including exterior high intensity LED navigation lights and aft cabin lighting just before the show (an AW139 for Construction Helicopters), it also announced that it has a new v-p and chief technology officer, Dr. Joseph Estrera.
Spectro Jet-Care–which provides laboratory analysis of aircraft oil, fuel, hydraulic fluid and debris–has added advanced optical imaging equipment to its arsenal of tools at its facilities in New Jersey, the UK and Switzerland. The new equipment allows extremely detailed analysis of chips found on magnetic chip detectors, in filters or within fluid samples, the company said. It also provides a depth of field and resolution that is better than that of conventional optical microscopes, as well as allows the ability to view the magnified images in 3-D.
The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), in collaboration with the FBI and the FAA, on February 11 launched a 12-city public awareness campaign about the safety issues surrounding laser attacks on aircraft cockpits. Reports of aircraft laser illuminations in the U.S. have increased sharply over the past few years–to 3,960 last year from 2,836 in 2010.
Thales (Stand 845) is demonstrating a futuristic in-flight entertainment (IFE) system using eye-tracking and gesture controls here at Dubai 2013. It could enter into service in two to three years from now in business and first classes, according to Christopher Mondragon, product design senior manager.
PGA Electronic, a specialist in cabin equipment, brought some new technology to the NBAA show and is exhibiting optical fibers for mood lighting, a new reading light and super-thin flat screens.
Night vision solutions provider Night Flight Concepts has released an infographic to teach pilots how to properly prepare for and defend against laser strikes. “As the annual number of laser strikes on aircraft increases, the topic of laser strike readiness [for aircrew] is becoming more pressing,” the company said. Night Flight’s infographic helps arm pilot with the tools they need to “identify, prepare for and recover from laser strikes.”

ATG is a leader in the design and manufacture of aircraft window treatments and shades, and Aviation Glass recently introduced a 1.7-mm clear glass that is up to 25-percent lighter than the typical 3-mm polycarbonate currently in use. The two companies formed a partnership and expect to “conquer new frontiers with its revolutionary glass solution.”
Night Flight Concepts (NFC) is offering laser defense training online. The one-hour course is available to law enforcement and other first responders for $95 and to other students for $125 through the company’s website: www.nightflightconcepts.com. Upon finishing the course, students take an online quiz and can print a certificate of completion.
The South African Civil Aviation Authority reported last week that the incidence of laser pointers being aimed at aircraft in that country’s airspace is on the rise, mostly during takeoff and landing. Last year 175 incidents were recorded. So far this year there have been 170, indicating a higher total for 2012.
