Pilots of aircraft approaching the Washington, D.C., area were again reminded on September 11 of the opportunity to fly one of two NextGen arrival procedures created to commemorate the 9/11 attacks on the nation’s capital in 2001. Jeppesen released an enhanced version of its FliteDeck Pro electronic flight bag solution for the iPad. Among the iOS 7-compliant features are new departure and arrival runway depiction (SID and Star) rendering on the en route map to raise pilot situational awareness; a new “flight info drawer” to create, load, view and save the active flight data; user-defined waypoints; and comments to identify important points along the en route map.

Speech-recognition technology has come a long way in the last few years, especially as cellphone makers seek to add voice search capability to their latest Web-enabled smartphones. So maybe it’s not too surprising that the FAA has signed off on a pilot-speech-recognition system that can enter GPS waypoints or victor airways en route simply by hearing them.

It combines Waypoint’s safety assessment with API’s Annual Health Chex, a top-to-bottom consultation with all members of the aviation department.
