Instrument proficiency and aviation safety association IMC Club International of Norwood, Mass., has reached an agreement with New Hampshire based PilotWorkshops.com to significantly upgrade the training offerings for IMC Club members.
Australia-based GippsAero announced yesterday at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis., that it will build a stretched turboprop derivative of its piston-powered GA8 Airvan, in addition to expanding its footprint in North America. Certified production of the GA10 turboprop single is expected to begin in 2013.
Avidyne announced this week at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis., that it is joining the push into touchscreen avionics control with the launch of the IFD540 FMS/GPS/navcom system. The IFD540 is a plug-and-play replacement for the Garmin GNS530, slotting into the Garmin tray and taking up the same real estate on the panel.
Rockwell Collins announced at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh that its engineers have developed a touchscreen interface for the Pro Line Fusion avionics suite. While no OEM has yet ordered Pro Line Fusion with the touchscreen interface, deployment could take place in time for some upcoming Fusion-equipped jet programs, according to systems engineer Dave Gribble, depending on certification requirements.
During a last-minute press conference held Tuesday under a bright blue sunny Oshkosh, Wis. sky, Tom Poberezny announced that he has decided to retire from his job as chairman of the Experimental Aircraft Association and chairman of the annual EAA AirVenture Oshkosh show. Poberezny, who has worked for EAA for the past 49 years, turns 65 this week and wants to have time to do things that his busy job never afforded.
Yesterday at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis., Cirrus co-founder Dale Klapmeier said the company’s recent majority acquisition by China’s state-owned Avic will provide the necessary capital to restart the moribund SF50 single-engine jet program. He said the company needs time to re-ramp and re-staff the effort and that a new timetable for the jet is at least four to five months out.
The Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) introduced Rod Hightower, its new president and CEO, to the business aviation community at a ceremony at the sport aviation organization's booth (No. 3246) at NBAA.
Hightower was named to the position this July at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis., following an extensive search for a successor to long-time organization leader Tom Poberezny.
The next step for the Experimental Aviation Association’s Young Eagles will be to develop a group of integrated programs “that not only spark an interest in aviation among young people but build a practical bridge for each young person to continue toward his own aviation goal,” according to Brian O’Lena, EAA’s youth programs manager.
Terrafugia is planning to build its new aircraft/auto hybrid, the Transition, in a new facility in Woburn, Mass. The company has said it is setting up for low-volume production of the roadable light sport aircraft as early as late 2011. Earlier this year, the company got approval from the FAA to increase the vehicle’s maximum takeoff weight by 110 pounds over the 1,320-pound maximum takeoff weight for light sport aircraft.
A highlight of AirVenture 2010 was the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the venerable Douglas DC-3, which changed aviation from a novelty to a major means of transportation all over the world. Approximately 500 DC-3s remain in the world today, and 100 of them are in the U.S. Thirty-six of those were at AirVenture, and 21 of them flew in on a mass flight from Rock Falls, Ill.
