The next step for the Experimental Aviation Association’s Young Eagles will be to develop a group of integrated programs “that not only spark an interest in aviation among young people but build a practical bridge for each young person to continue toward his own aviation goal,” according to Brian O’Lena, EAA’s youth programs manager.
Terrafugia is planning to build its new aircraft/auto hybrid, the Transition, in a new facility in Woburn, Mass. The company has said it is setting up for low-volume production of the roadable light sport aircraft as early as late 2011. Earlier this year, the company got approval from the FAA to increase the vehicle’s maximum takeoff weight by 110 pounds over the 1,320-pound maximum takeoff weight for light sport aircraft.
A highlight of AirVenture 2010 was the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the venerable Douglas DC-3, which changed aviation from a novelty to a major means of transportation all over the world. Approximately 500 DC-3s remain in the world today, and 100 of them are in the U.S. Thirty-six of those were at AirVenture, and 21 of them flew in on a mass flight from Rock Falls, Ill.
AirVenture 2010 was blessed with few accidents. The replica Sikorsky S-38 amphibian Osa’s Ark suffered a collapsed landing gear on Runway 18/36, but that was quickly fixed and the flying boat was able to taxi on its own legs. On July 27 a Hawker Beechcraft Premier IA piloted by Jack Roush crashed while landing on Runway 18.
NBAA and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) last week at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis., announced that two Light Business Aviation (LBA) Conferences will be held this year–one at each group’s annual convention. The two groups had planned similar LBA conferences in 2008, but those plans were scuttled when the economy deteriorated later in the year.

At about 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, a Hawker Beechcraft Premier I piloted by Jack Roush crashed at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wis., on the second day of the annual EAA AirVenture show. The Premier was flying from Ypisilanti, Mich., to Oshkosh. A witness told AIN that the Premier “approached very tight to the runway” and overshot, then was “doing sharp turns” and was flying very slowly at a low altitude above Wittman’s Runway 18.
