Dornier’s twin-turboprop all-composite Seastar CD2 made its first appearance at the EAA AirVenture show in Oshkosh, Wis., in July, the first stop in a tour of North America that included demo flights in Vancouver, Canada, and Seattle, culminating in a visit to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in Monterey, Calif., in August. At Oshkosh, “The response was much greater than anticipated,” said Dornier Seaplane CEO Joe Walker.
The 578,000 or so people who attended this year’s EAA AirVenture show in Oshkosh, Wis., consumed beverages contained in at least six tons of packaging. This year Anheuser-Busch Recycling and local Aviation Explorer Posts teamed up and collected 11,780 pounds of recyclable materials from the show grounds, including campgrounds. The haul of materials consisted of 70 percent plastic and 30 percent aluminum cans.

At EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis., this week, Avidyne introduced its new low-cost FMS400, which provides flight management system functionality but without WAAS precision approach capability. Like the WAAS-capable FMS900w, the FMS400 includes Avidyne’s GeoFill and FMSVectors functions; the FMS can later be upgraded to an FMS900w if desired. The FMS900w includes an FMS keyboard, which is optional on the FMS400.

Yesterday at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis., Garmin announced the new ADS-B-in GTS 800 and 820 traffic advisory systems (TAS) and GTS 850 TCAS. All three systems combine ADS-B and radar targets using Garmin’s Clear CAS technology. The GTS 800 offers 12-nm interrogation range and 40 Watts of transmit power and retails for $9,995; the GTS 820 ($19,995) and 850 ($23,495) deliver 250 Watts and 40-nm range.
Bend, Ore.-based Stratos Aircraft on Tuesday began taking refundable escrowed $50,000 deposits for its single-engine Stratos 714 very light jet. Company chief technology officer Carsten Sundin told AIN that the first 25 aircraft will be sold for $2 million each, after which there will be a modest, but as-yet-undetermined, price increase.
The EAA announced that Elvis, one of 17 S-64 Aircranes operated and owned by Erickson, will be on display at its annual convention in Wisconsin this month and would likely fly demonstration slurry drops from its massive 2,650-gallon tank. The Oregon company builds, sells and operates S-64s in a variety of firefighting, construction and logging applications.
Dornier Seaplane exhibited its all-composite Seastar amphibian at the Canadian Business Aviation Association show in Montreal in late May, showing off fresh paint and an upgraded interior. The Seastar program “is gaining momentum,” according to Joe Walker, CEO of the Punta Gorda, Fla.-based company, which has taken orders for 25 of the twin-turboprop amphibians.
