NASA’s small aircraft transportation system (SATS), a five-year, $69 million project aimed at maximizing the benefits of light aircraft and small airports, announced at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh that it selected four teams to participate in its initial research and development phase. The Maryland team will focus on evolving existing flight procedures, integrating new technology and studying human factors.

In growing numbers, interiors specialists are taking cues from the automotive industry. The latest is German light-jet developer Grob Aerospace, which unveiled the new executive cabin mockup for its Grob SPn utility jet last month at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh. The interior was designed by Porsche Design Studio of Bietigheim-Bissingen, Germany, with the U.S. market in mind.
Epic’s Elite VLJ made its maiden flight on June 7 from Redmond, Ore.’s Roberts Field. Performance projections for the Elite, which is powered by two Williams International FJ33-4 turbofans, include 410-knot maximum speed, 1,600-nm range with reserves at economy cruise and 1,330-pound payload with full fuel. Construction of the six- to eight-seat jet is all carbon fiber; avionics are Garmin’s G900X system.
The Experimental Aircraft Association AirVenture at Oshkosh, Wis., next month will be the site for the first public viewing of the HondaJet, an experimental very light jet which has quietly been under development for several years at a Honda research facility at Piedmont Triad Airport in Greensboro, N.C. The jet, powered by two GE Honda HF118 turbofans, made its first flight in December 2003.
Czech aircraft designer and manufacturer Evektor-Aerotechnik, best known for a line of light piston singles, will begin promotion of its new EV-55 twin turboprop at the EAA AirVenture fly-in at Oshkosh, Wis., later this month. The unpressurized aircraft, partly financed by the Czech government, is priced at $1.7 million and is expected to sell as an alternative to turboprop singles such as the Cessna Caravan.
Eclipse Aviation unveiled its home-grown PhostrEx fire-suppression system for the Eclipse 500 today at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis. According to the Albuquerque, N.M.-based company, its recently FAA-certified PhostrEx system weighs 90 percent less than a Halon fire-suppression system since two teaspoons of PhostrEx is equivalent to 2.5 cups of Halon.
Holding to a schedule announced last year, Epic Aircraft of Las Vegas flew its prototype Epic LT for the first time on July 17, from Redmond Airport, Ore., not far from the company’s research and development facility in Bend, where the airplane was assembled. Dave Morss was the test pilot.
