Two Air India pilots and a pair of flight attendants have been suspended from duty pending an investigation into an April 13 incident in which both pilots left the flight deck of the Airbus A321 at the same time for 40 minutes of rest in the cabin. The pilots left two flight attendants in the cockpit to monitor the aircraft. The pilots returned to the cockpit only after one of the flight attendants mistakenly turned off the autopilot.
Bristow Academy Mountain Flying Training has taught more than 100 pilots the ins and outs of mountain flying since opening in May 2011. The operation is based in Carson City, Nev., offering pilots the opportunity to hone their skills in the challenging Lake Tahoe region. Pilots from all over the world have traveled to Carson City for the course, which is available in bilingual English/Spanish. The course spans 40 hours of classroom time and 18 hours of flying, including seven hours flying with night-vision goggles (NVGs).

Pilots at Clearwater, Fla.-based fractional provider Avantair voted for organization under the United Transportation Union (UTU) on Thursday. Among the pilots who participated in the election, 80 percent voted in favor of the union. The pilots are now represented under UTU’s transportation division, which represents only one other pilot group–at regional airline Great Lakes Aviation. “We have assured our pilots that negotiations will be made in good faith,” Avantair said.
Ajit Singh, head of India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation, and members of the Association of Indian Commercial Pilots have begun another safety-focused battle of wills. The pilots have filed a petition in court claiming the minister overstepped his authority when his department increased the maximum number of hours pilots will be expected to fly in a single day, as well as the length of their maximum allowable duty day. The pilots claim Singh’s actions violate current Indian civil aviation rules.
Six weeks after unanimously voting “No Confidence” in the management of Boeing’s Training & Flight Services division, pilots employed by the company to deliver airplanes and help prepare customer crews to fly new aircraft have decided to go public with their displeasure with Boeing’s decision to hire contract pilots to perform 787 training.
When Air India was denied a place in the Star Alliance last summer, one of the reasons cited were claims from some of the airline’s pilots that the company was coercing them to fly longer hours than the terms of the contract required. The airline currently still owes many employees, even ex-patriot pilots, tens of thousands of dollars in back wages as the company struggles to stay afloat.
Pilots at the offshore helicopter transport company ratified a three-year deal that provides for 4 percent annual wage increases retroactive to March 26, 2012. The new contract covers 235 helicopter pilots flying in the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska.
The FAA admitted in court on May 20 that there might have been flaws in the data the agency used to decide that cargo pilots should be excluded from new rest rules published last December.
Flight academies and schools throughout the world are going to fill much of the need for pilots, which is projected to grow rapidly in the coming decades. Boeing projects a need for 26,660 new pilots per year during the next 20 years.

CAE Global Academy produces about 1,800 new pilots per year at facilities in India, Malaysia, Australia, Canada, the U.S., Europe and Africa.
