The FAA has issued an airworthiness directive for all Honeywell ALF502L-2C; ALF502R-3; ALF502R-3A; ALF502R-5; LF507-1F; and LF507-1H turbofans. The AD was prompted by two reports of engines experiencing uncontained release of low-pressure (LP) turbine blades. The AD requires operational checks of the engine overspeed trip system to prevent LP turbine overspeed, which could lead to uncontained release of the LP turbine blades and damage to the airplane.
Eurocopter AS350B2, Chickaloon, Alaska, April 15, 2008–The NTSB blamed the fatal crash on loss of engine power due to an overspeed of the helicopter’s engine, precipitated by the inadvertent movement of the fuel-flow control lever by the passenger. The AS350, operated by ERA Helicopters under Part 135, was transporting telecommunications technicians to remote sites.
Working in its own quiet low-key way, Schweizer Aircraft has revealed its new 300CBi. An enhanced upgrade of the company’s strong-selling 300CB, the new 300CBi features a fuel-injected 180-hp Lycoming HIO-360-C1A engine. Schweizer maintains that throttle correlation is noticeably more precise and engine response is smoother and more immediate than with its predecessor’s carburetor-equipped Lycoming engine.
