Boeing’s Phantom Works is developing a version of its ScanEagle Compressed Carriage (SECC) unmanned air system that can track submarines using magnetic anomaly detection (MAD) equipment. Known as MagEagle Compressed Carriage (MECC), the UAS is envisioned to operate in conjunction with the company’s P-8 Poseidon maritime patroller.

Boeing is due to fly the first P-8A maritime patrol aircraft equipped with a mission system early next year as the program to replace the U.S. Navy’s aging fleet of P-3 maritime patrol aircraft moves into the flight-test phase. The Navy plans to buy 117 P-8As, derived from the 737-800 airliner, with an initial operating capability in 2013. Meanwhile, India is the first export customer, with eight aircraft on order.
With the recent handover flights from the commercial factory to Boeing Integrated Defense Systems (IDS) in Seattle, the P-8A Poseidon next-generation maritime patroller for the U.S. Navy remains “firmly on track,” according to Tony Parasida, vice president and general manager of Boeing IDS’s ASW & ISR Systems division.
India became the first export customer for the Boeing P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft. Unusually, Boeing clinched the sale of eight aircraft on commercial rather than FMS terms, and persuaded India to commit even before the P-8’s first flight.
The U.S. Navy is expected to issue a draft request for proposals this quarter for the EP-X intelligence-gathering aircraft, which will replace the EP-3 Aries. In a recent briefing, Boeing revealed that Raytheon was joining its team to bid the P-8 Poseidon for EP-X.
Northrop Grumman rates its chances of clinching the KC-X contract as only 50 percent, if the US Congress intervenes in the decision. Paul Meyer, who heads the company’s bid team, told Aviation International News of his confidence that the Pentagon would select the KC-45 again second time round. But he fears that protectionist sentiment could overturn the verdict.

But there are problems, such as affordability, and U.S. government export restrictions.
