The Pentagon’s aging aircraft concerns won’t go away. About 60 percent of the U.S. Air Force’s 440 F-15A/B/C/D interceptors have been cleared to resume flying after inspections for structural fatigue of the forward fuselage longerons. But cracks have been found in some airplanes, and the remaining 40 percent of the fleet could need repairs.

Boeing has revealed a surprise entry for the U.S. Navy’s Broad Area Maritime Surveillance (BAMS) competition. While two rival bids use High-Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), Boeing is adapting the Gulfstream G550 to fly the mission manned or unmanned.

Stores management systems for maritime patrol aircraft are proving a good earner for Smiths Aerospace. The company’s selection to provide the equipment for the 80 P-X replacements for Japan’s P-3 fleet is valued at more than $40 million: production is due to start in 2008 at Smiths’ Michigan and Florida facilities.

EMS Satcom (Hall 4 Stand C17E) has been selected by the French Navy as part of a team that includes Eclipse and France Telecom to provide a broadband high-speed data solution for six of its maritime patrol aircraft, with an option for two more.
