A Cessna 208 Grand Caravan operated by Makani Kai Air crashed after the engine quit shortly after takeoff from Kalaupapa Airport, Hawaii, on December 11. One person died after the aircraft impacted the water. The injuries of the remaining eight people, one of whom was the pilot, were not reported. The aircraft was destined for Honolulu International Airport at the time of the accident.

Maui-based Pacific Wings exacted a small measure of revenge on Hawaiian gatecrasher Mesa Air Group last month when it won the rights to two of Mesa’s Essential Air Service destinations in New Mexico. Pacific Wings plans to start serving Hobbs and Carlsbad, N.M., from Albuquerque using four nine-seat Cessna Grand Caravans on June 1.

Mesa Air Group has now taken aim at a less visible target within the inter-island Hawaiian market, much to the dismay of incumbent turboprop stalwarts Island Air and Pacific Wings. By agreeing to enter a new code-share deal last month with Kona-based Mokulele Airlines, Mesa’s go!
