Papillon Grand Canyon Helicopters has selected Honeywell’s Traffic and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) for its fleet of helicopters. Said Elling Halvorson, chairman of Papillon, “The initial systems will be installed on our EC 130 fleet of 12 helicopters.
EUROCOPTER AS 350-B2, MEADVIEW, ARIZ., AUG. 10, 2001–At 2:28 p.m. MST Eurocopter helicopter N169PA, operating as Papillon 34, crashed during an uncontrolled descent about four miles east of Meadview. The helicopter was operated by Papillon Grand Canyon Helicopters as an air-tour flight under FAR Part 135. The instrument-rated commercial pilot and five passengers were killed, and one remaining passenger was seriously injured.
Elling Halvorson, chairman of Papillon Airways, and a team of investors composed of helicopter industry executives have acquired Soloy Corp., an engine mod company. Soloy will operate as a stand-alone company and will remain located in Olympia, Wash., according to Halvorson. Soloy was founded in 1970 by Joe Soloy, who died in February at age 78.
The only survivor of an August 10 sightseeing helicopter crash at the Grand Canyon has filed suit against Papillon Grand Canyon Helicopters of Grand Canyon, Ariz., its four principals and a mechanic, as well as American Eurocopter (maker of the AS 350B2 helicopter), Turbomeca Engine Corp. and Zuni LLC, a Washington-based helicopter retailer.
A 25-year-old Illinois man jumped to his death from a Papillon Airways Bell 206L while in cruise flight over the Grand Canyon on June 10. According to Papillon, the passenger called on June 9 and requested a window seat on a tour flight. A window seat wasn’t available, so the passenger called back the next day (June 10) and was told that he could get a window seat.
HAI announced recipients for two of its awards that will be presented at Heli-Expo February 7 in Anaheim, Calif. Elling Halvorson, founder and chairman of Papillon Grand Canyon Helicopters in Grand Canyon, Ariz., will receive the Lawrence D. Bell Award. The 2004 Aviation Maintenance Technician Award will be presented to Rich Barnett, Gulf Coast maintenance manager for Air Logistics in New Iberia, La.
Twenty-nine-year-old Chana Daskal, the sole survivor of an Aug. 10, 2001 Papillon Grand Canyon Helicopters crash, will receive $38 million under a settlement. Besides losing her husband in the accident, Daskal suffered severe burns and had both legs amputated.
The canyon is called Descent and the maneuver was called the “yo-yo” by Sundance Helicopter pilots and the “Thelma-and-Louise” by Papillon Airways pilots. The trip was a thrilling three-minute helicopter ride over the rim of the Grand Canyon, down Descent Canyon to land at the floor of the canyon.
