While the U.S. government is on a Congress-created enforced shutdown, the aviation industry might be tempted to wonder what the FAA actually accomplishes. What we are learning is that a lot of what the FAA does is process paperwork. And when the paperwork stops flowing, we can be forced to stop flying.
Parts Manufacturer Approval
DAC International has received FAA parts manufacturer approval for its GDC62 radio altimeter interface unit and the GDC66 fuel quantity adapter unit. These converters, developed specifically for the Piper Meridian, permit the continued use of the existing radio altimeter and fuel quantity computer and are required for the G950 cockpit retrofit STC owned by Cutter Aviation. DAC International’s engineering and certification division achieved the approvals in partnership with Cutter Aviation.
Aircraft Lighting International (ALI) has received parts manufacturer approval (PMA) for its 12-mm LED lights, designed and built as direct replacements for B/E Aerospace and ALI fluorescents.
According to the Mount Sinai, N.Y.-based company, the replacement LEDs require no new wiring, no new lamp holders, no new dimmers and no new controllers. They are fully dimmable and “100-percent interchangeable with existing fluorescent lamps.”
Satellite communications equipment manufacturer Thrane & Thrane introduced its new flagship Aviation 700D at the European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (EBACE) last month in Geneva.
The announcement follows parts manufacturer approval (PMA) from the FAA, allowing certification for use on all aircraft and permitting the Danish company to start worldwide shipment of the product.
The world market for PMA Parts will reach $749 million by the year 2017, according to a report from Global Industry Analysts of San Jose, Calif. PMA Parts–A Global Strategic Business Report predicts the robust gains will be driven by Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe and South America.
The deadline for interested parties to submit comments about the FAA’s proposed policy statement regarding “Inappropriate DAH [Design Approval Holder] Restrictions on the Use and Availability of ICA” closed December 5. Two aircraft manufacturers–Boeing and Gulfstream Aerospace–commented, as did two associations, the Modification and Replacement Parts Association (MARPA) and the Aviation Suppliers Association (ASA).
