Emivest Aerospace is asking that its court-administered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection be extended through midsummer while it tries to complete the sale of its assets to an entity owned by the Chinese government. Last week, attorneys for the maker of the SJ30 light jet filed a motion with the U.S.
The nation’s foremost aircraft repossessor is counseling his bank and leasing company clients not to take back delinquent aircraft. “We are telling banks not to repo,” said Nick Popovich, president of Sage-Popovich, the global aircraft repossession, aviation parts and services company.
For the business aviation industry, the past year has been a trying one, to say
the least. Aircraft sales and usage declined steeply as the economic downturn tightened its grip, forcing operators to cope with the new financial realities, and in some cases with disparaging views of the industry.
Credit is tight, but money is available. That’s the message from Jim Pulie, director of business development for Center Capital’s general aviation division.
Galaxy Aviation is offering Visa gift cards to pilots who visit the company’s new FBO terminal and hangar facility during this year’s NBAA Convention (October 6 to 8) in Orlando, Fla. From October 5 to 9, Galaxy will give pilots a gift card in the amount of 10 cents per gallon for every gallon over 250 purchased at Galaxy Orlando.
Buying an aircraft can be a daunting task. Unless a company or individual has deep pockets, it will inevitably require either leasing with an option to buy or financing a purchase. Even if paying in cash is an option, doing so can be problematic. Dave Labrozzi, senior v-p and general manager of Danbury, Conn.-based GE Corporate Aircraft Group, explained the difference between leasing with an option to buy and outright purchase.

Mercury Air Center in conjunction with GE Capital Financial and Aviation Logistics has developed a MasterCard purchase program for business aviation operators. The Mercury Easy Trip card is designed to replace the multiple charge cards now carried by flight crews. The card is good for all trip transactions at any FBO, not just Mercury locations.
An 11th-hour effort on January 31 failed to keep OEM startup VisionAire afloat after a federal district court judge placed the company back into Chapter 7 bankruptcy on January 21. The company had been operating under Chapter 11 bankruptcy since September, when the judge agreed to the voluntary insolvency after five creditors petitioned the court to place VisionAire into involuntary Chapter 7 bankruptcy in July.
Unlike insurance rates, which are decreasing slightly or at least stabilizing, aviation financing rates have apparently bottomed out and were on the rise last month.
However, like home mortgage rates, interest rates for aircraft are still near historic lows. What direction they go next is impossible to predict accurately, but current economic conditions seem to point in a continued upward direction.
