The world’s busiest airport in terms of overall passenger traffic has added a new international terminal. The Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport opened May 16 after more than a decade of planning and nearly four years of construction.

A proposed stadium for the Arizona Cardinals NFL football team in Tempe, Ariz., would be a hazard to airplanes using Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, the FAA concluded last month. The FAA lacks the authority to stop construction, but its conclusion might prompt the state to consider other locations. The Cardinals is the only NFL team that uses a college stadium as a home field. The proposed site is 2 mi east of the airport.

It has been said that “if you want something done, give it to a busy person.” This seems appropriate in the case of Jerry Moyes, president and CEO of Phoenix-based Swift Transportation, the world’s largest truckload carrier, with 16,000 trucks and 50,000 trailers covering 34 million miles a week. When the company went public in 1990 it had gross revenues of $120 million.

The newly completed Swift Aviation Services (SAS) FBO at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) is up and running and welcoming large business jets beneath the massive canopy that covers 0.7 of an acre of ramp space near the west end of Runway 7R-25L.

Phoenix-based Swift Aviation Group (Booth No. 615) announced that it has been named the official FBO of the Arizona Super Bowl XLII Host Committee. The designation allows Swift to provide Super Bowl-related hospitality and promotional programs to users of its facility. The FBO, on the southwest side Sky Harbor International Airport, includes a private terminal and two 40,000-sq-ft hangars.

A new 50,500-sq-ft hangar complex opened at Cutter Aviation’s Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) FBO. The three-unit complex can accommodate airplanes as large as the Bombardier Global Express and offers corporate aviation amenities such as office and shop space, private covered parking, catering kitchen, conference room and full security system.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) completed the first segment of a three-phase runway maintenance and improvement project last month. Phase Two, which began last month, involves temporarily displacing the threshold of 11,500-foot Runway 8/26, allowing 6,000 feet of usable runway and a 1,000-foot overrun. At press time, the runway was scheduled to be closed completely from February 28 until March 1.
