Italian aircraft manufacturer Piaggio Aero (Booth No. 3717) yesterday celebrated a milestone agreement with the sale of 22 Avanti II twin turboprops to U.S. fractional operator Avantair.
Piaggio Aero Industries (Booth No. 3717) got a fast start to NBAA’07, setting a speed record with an Avanti II on the way to Atlanta. The twin-engine turboprop covered the 397 nm between Indianapolis International Airport and DeKalb-Peachtree Airport in one hour and nine minutes, for an average speed of 345 knots.
Even as Italian manufacturer Piaggio Aero Industries reaps the benefits of a remarkable sales resurgence in the U.S., the company increasingly views its own backyard as fertile soil for future growth.
For its sleek Avanti II, Piaggio reports a two-year backlog valued at more than $600 million. That’s the good news. The bad news is that despite efforts to increase production, the Italian manufacturer shows little sign of putting a credible dent in that backlog in the near future.
Piaggio Aero Industries’ speedy Avanti II, long acknowledged as the fastest turboprop aircraft in the world, is now even faster.
At EBACE, Piaggio announced that the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has granted approval for installation of the Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6-66B in the Avanti II, giving the twin-engine pusher a maximum cruise speed of 402 knots (Mach 0.70).
Avionics manufacturer Rockwell Collins announced that its Pro Line 21 Integrated Display System (IDS) has been certified for the Piaggio 180. According to the company, the Pro Line 21 IDS will provide the aircraft owners with larger, more informative LCD displays, featuring new content such as electronic charts and graphic weather maps from Rockwell Collins’ Integrated Flight Information System.
Piaggio Avanti, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., March 20, 2007–The Avanti, operated by fractional operator Avantair, was substantially damaged when landing at Hollywood International Airport, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The ATP-rated first officer was flying the airplane, on approach to Runway 9R, at 120 knots.
The Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 integrated display system (IDS) has been certified in a Piaggio Avanti at Jet Works in Denton, Texas, according to the avionics maker. The LCD display suite brings electronic charts and graphical weather capability to the airplane through the Collins IFIS (integrated flight information system) file server.
Breaking from its single-airplane fleet of Piaggio Avanti twin turboprops, Fairfield, N.J.-based fractional provider Avantair has added two new Beechcraft Premier I light jets as core airplanes. Avantair CEO Steven Santo told AIN that the jets were added since his company has been unable to add Avantis fast enough as core airplanes.

In the online survey, an artist’s concept depicts a light/medium twinjet with a remarkable resemblance to the Avanti II turboprop twin from Italian aircraft manufacturer Piaggio.
