The U.S. Attorney for the eastern district of California reported March 10 that Sergio Patrick Rodriguez of Clovis, Calif., was sentenced to 14 years in prison for aiming a laser pointer at a Fresno police helicopter in the summer of 2012. Rodriguez’s sentence is believed to be the longest yet delivered for a laser-pointer incident. United States District Judge Lawrence O’Neill said the crime was serious with potentially deadly consequences.

The South African Civil Aviation Authority reported last week that the incidence of laser pointers being aimed at aircraft in that country’s airspace is on the rise, mostly during takeoff and landing. Last year 175 incidents were recorded. So far this year there have been 170, indicating a higher total for 2012.

Significant local progress in network-centric military operations was reported here Monday at the C4I Asia conference by Singapore defense officials. They described recent Singapore armed forces (SAF) exercises and gave pointers about future development in what they call IKC2 (integrated knowledge-based command and control).
