Pompano Beach, Florida

The City of Pompano Beach is extending the main runway at Pompano Beach Airpark by 500 feet. Upon completion early this year, Runway 15-33 at the Fort Lauderdale area airport will be 4,918 feet long, allowing for easier takeoffs and landings and affording an increased level of safety.

The present expansion is somewhat ironic. The city–in an attempt to emphasize the former military training base’s GA-only usage–shortened 15-33 from its original length of 5,000 feet to its current length of 4,420 feet in 1971.

The city of Pompano Beach, Fla., has been assailed by aviation interests over a proposed 40-story condominium complex to be built adjacent to Pompano Beach Airpark (PMP). The FAA has deemed the condo project a “hazard to navigation,” and AOPA has written to the city manager sternly opposing the construction. The airport has more than 250 based aircraft and hosted more than 200,000 operations last year.

The FAA has told city administrators of Pompano Beach, Fla., that the federal agency will not reconsider its position on city attempts to restrict general aviation operations at Pompano Beach Airpark. When the city attempted to limit or shut down flight training at the public airport, AOPA filed a formal complaint with the FAA. The agency ordered the city to stop its efforts to unfairly restrict GA use of the airport.
