Toronto-based Porter Airlines on Wednesday revealed itself as the “unidentified Americas-based” customer for the Bombardier CSeries. The purchase agreement, still subject to certain conditions including relaxing the airport’s limitations on jet operations, calls for a firm order for 12 CS100s and options on another 18.

Air Canada regional subsidiary Jazz Aviation began operating its first 74-seat Bombardier Q400 turboprop on June 7 on a route linking Toronto Pearson International Airport with Quebec City. On May 26 the airline took delivery of the first of 15 Q400s, all of which will replace 50-seat Bombardier CRJs as the delivery schedule stretches into July 2012. Jazz also holds options on another 15 airplanes.

Air Canada launched the first direct competition against Bombardier Q400 operator Porter Airlines out of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport on May 1, when the flag carrier’s new regional subsidiary, Sky Regional Airlines, began service between the downtown Toronto airfield and Montreal. Flying under the new Air Canada Express brand, Sky Regional operates hourly Q400 service up to 15 times daily, between 7:30 a.m.

Toronto-based Porter Airlines last month signed a firm order with Bombardier for four Q400s and placed options for another six of the 74-seat turboprops. The four aircraft will increase the size of Porter's Q400 fleet to 24. Porter's delivery schedule calls for the first airplane to arrive in the second quarter of next year. Deliveries would continue through the third quarter of 2012 if Porter exercises all of its options.

The first phase of a two-stage terminal expansion at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport opened to Porter Airlines passengers on March 7. Porter Aviation Holdings subsidiary City Centre Terminal operates the new $50 million passenger terminal and seeks retail, food services, duty-free and other tenants for the 150,000-sq-ft project. Phase one includes lounge facilities, a new check-in hall and office space.
