Russia’s General Account Office (GAO) has completed a study into the Sukhoi Superjet 100 program and found it “under the threat of closing down.” In its report, the GAO says that direct government investment in the project from 2003 to 2010 amounted to 16.9 billion roubles ($513 million).

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) granted type approval in late January to Franco-Russian engine maker PowerJet for a more powerful version of the SaM146 turbofan. Designated the SaM146 1S18, the engine offers 16,100 pounds of takeoff thrust, compared with the 1S17’s 15,400 pounds, thereby increasing the Sukhoi Superjet 100-95 LR’s mtow and extending its range to 2,470 nm with a full passenger load.

Former Powerjet chairman and CEO Jean-Paul Ebanga has assumed the role of president and chief executive officer of CFM International, the GE-Snecma joint venture announced today. Ebanga replaces Eric Bachelet, who had served as CFM president and CEO since September 2005. Bachelet has accepted the position of Safran executive vice president of research and technology.

The Powerjet SaM146 received its EASA certification yesterday, June 23, some six years after Snecma of France and Russia's NPO Saturn founded the joint venture to build the engine and more than seven years after Sukhoi Civil Aircraft chose the engine to power the Superjet 100.
