The FAA and Pratt & Whitney Canada believe they have found the cause of three high-altitude double engine flameouts on Pratt & Whitney Canada JT15D-5-powered Beechjets between mid-2004 and mid-2006.

Hawker Beechcraft Beechjet 400, Jacksonville, Fla., Nov. 28, 2005–Both engines of the Flight Options Beechjet flamed out because high-altitude ice crystals that had accumulated on the P&WC JT15D-5 engines’ compressor vanes were ingested when the pilots pulled back the power levers to descend, according to the NTSB.
BBA Aviation’s engine repair and overhaul division has added 16 new engine models to its existing authorizations on Pratt & Whitney Canada engines. The additions encompass eight new variants of the PT6A, seven variants of the PW100 and one variant of the PW500.
BizJet International, on the strength of its acquisition last fall by Lufthansa Technik and “exceptional growth” over the past year, sees continued growth in the future. At a press conference yesterday, company president and CEO Peter Loeb noted as one example record demand for JT15D engine overhaul and repair. “By the end of September, the year will have been the best year in the company’s history for JT15D overhaul and repair,” he said.
Honeywell and Pratt & Whitney Canada have agreed to start doing component repairs on some models of each other’s engines. The details of the agreement are still to be formalized, but it is expected that it will cover Honeywell’s TPE331 turboprops and TFE731 turbofans, as well as its 36-100 and 36-150 auxiliary power units. It will also apply to P&WC’s PW100 and PT6 turboprops and its JT15D turbofan.
Legendary aerobatic pilot Bob Hoover recently joined the flight testing and evaluation team for Sierra Industries’ FJ44 Eagle II, a retrofit of the Cessna Citation 501 with Williams International FJ44-2A fanjets.
Now settled into its new 36,000-sq-ft hangar facility, Chantilly Air continues to increase its FAA Part 145 repair station maintenance capacity. The company services Bombardier, Cessna, Gulfstream and Hawker Beechcraft aircraft.
T-G Aviation, based at Hamilton Airport in Mount Hope, Ontario, Canada, signed an agreement with Pratt & Whitney Canada to provide category I maintenance, including hot-section inspections, for three P&WC engine series–the JT15D, PT6/6T and PW500. The service is a natural extension of the T-G Aviation Super Cheyenne conversion package for the Piper Cheyenne I and II, which specifies PT6A-135A turbine engines.
Richmond Heights, Ohio-based Nextant Aerospace announced last month its 400NXT Beechjet retrofit and modernization program and Pro Line 21 cockpit upgrade for Beechjets and Hawker 400XPs.
