On June 14, Beechjet 400A N440DS lost all power from both Pratt & Whitney Canada JT15D-5 engines while the airplane was in cruise flight at FL380 near Norfolk, Va. Unsure if they could remain clear of clouds, the pilots decided to turn on the engine anti-ice.

In the aftermath of four dual flameouts involving P&WC JT15D-powered Beechjets, the NTSB on Friday issued an urgent recommendation to help prevent further incidents on Beechjets and a broader recommendation calling on the FAA to work with engine and airplane OEMs to develop an ice detector for new engines, as well as for retrofit.

Details emerged about two more very light jets (VLJs) during last month’s Latin American Business Aviation Conference and Exhibition in Brazil, a fitting venue since both aircraft are being developed in the South American country. Pratt & Whitney Canada CSC (Africa) is offering engine overhaul services following an expansion project at its South Africa facility located at the Lanseria International Airport in Johannesburg. The facility now offers comprehensive engine overhaul services for the PT6A.

Dallas Airmotive also recently announced that it has opened a regional turbine center in Millville, N.J. The 8,000-sq-ft facility supports turbine aircraft operators in the Northeastern U.S. and is located at Millville Municipal Airport adjacent to the company’s maintenance hangar. Last year Dallas Airmotive closed Millville engine overhaul operations.

Turbine engines are extremely reliable and many business jet pilots go through their entire careers experiencing engine failures only during simulator training. But in mid-July, two Beechjet 400A pilots found out what it’s like to lose not just one engine in flight, but both of them. Fortunately for them and their seven passengers they were able to get one of the light jet’s engines restarted during the descent.

Dallas Airmotive is adding component repair capability for the Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A/T, JT15D and PW300/ PW500 engine series to its Lafayette, La. facility. It already supports numerous offshore operators using the Rolls-Royce 250 engine.
