Korean Air has selected the Pratt & Whitney PW4170 Advantage70 engine to power five new Airbus A330-200s. Valued at some $200 million, the firm deal covers 10 engines.

Pratt & Whitney offers the Advantage70 as both a new engine and as an upgrade kit for existing PW4168 engines. The upgrade includes a suite of technology enhancements Pratt & Whitney can incorporate during engine overhauls, and promises a 2-percent thrust increase, more than 1-percent reduction in fuel burn, increased durability and lower maintenance costs.

Asiana Airlines has selected Pratt & Whitney’s fleet management program for three of its P&W-powered Boeing 777s, the engine manufacturer announced here at the Singapore Airshow. Eagle Services Asia, Pratt & Whitney Global Service Partners’ engine overhaul facility in Singapore, will be responsible for the six-year agreement, which provides for the maintenance of six PW4090 turbofans that power the aircraft.

Nine contracts worth more than $630 million were awarded to MTU Maintenance last November. “The deals we made again demonstrate that amid a difficult economic environment, MTU remains competitive and well positioned,” commented Egon Behle, CEO of MTU Aero Engines. The agreements signed in part are long-term, up to 10-year arrangements covering V2500, CF6 and PW2000 engines. They come mostly from the U.S. and Europe.

The news that Pratt & Whitney had beaten Rolls-Royce and General Electric in the competition to power the new Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ) was received in the company’s Connecticut headquarters with more than the usual celebration. It meant that Pratt & Whitney had secured a launch order for one of the most important engines it has ever developed.

British charter airline MyTravel is using an electronic technical log (ETL) to manage its aircraft fleet data, including maintenance requirements and trip reports. This is another step in the goal to achieving a truly paperless cockpit, according to Data Systems & Solutions (DS&S), UK-based developer of the CoreWing ETL.
