Cessna Citation 550, Brac, Croatia, July 15, 2010–The Serbian-registered Citation Bravo, operated by Prince Aviation, was substantially damaged when it overran the runway at Brac Airport after landing on a flight from Albania. The twinjet broke through the airport's perimeter fence and caught fire after it came to rest in a ditch. The two pilots, flight attendant and two passengers escaped unharmed.
As evidence of the continuing demand for new aircraft in the Middle East, Cessna handed over four Citations to four separate customers at the Dubai Air Show. Jordan’s Arab Wings received a Sovereign, while the Egyptian Aviation Academy took delivery of the first of four Mustangs on order.
More than 18 months after it was revealed that Cessna was seeking corporate approval to build its largest ever Citation service center in Wichita, Cessna announced last month the project is a go. Construction is set to start before year-end on a 443,000-sq-ft facility at Wichita Mid-Continent Airport on a 150-acre site leased to Cessna by the Wichita Airport Authority.
“We are dedicated to expanding our worldwide Citation product network and doubling the capacity of our Cessna-owned service facilities during the next five years,” according to Cessna v-p of service facilities Jim Morgan.
The University of North Dakota (UND) has ordered a Cessna Citation Mustang for flight training and executive transport. UND is the first flight school to order Cessna’s light jet. Cessna (Booth No. 8550) said it plans to deliver 44 Mustangs this year.
Cessna’s new and expanded Citation service center in Orlando, Fla., opened for business on June 21. The 155,000-sq-ft facility, which replaces the original 47,275-sq-ft center built there in 1983, will be further enlarged to nearly 200,000 sq ft by October. Cessna is also building a massive Citation service center at its headquarters in Wichita.
On December 9 Cessna Aircraft claimed another record, though this one does not involve any aircraft speed or distance. In support of its expanding customer services, that day Cessna held grand-opening ceremonies for its 443,000-sq-ft Wichita Citation Service Center, below, the largest general aviation maintenance facility in the world.
Cessna’s receipt of flight-in-known-icing certification for the Citation Mustang in early November means that the jet’s certification program is complete and it is time to remove the airplane from the In The Works list.
The first Mustang delivered will be used for customer demonstrations. Cessna plans to deliver 40 Mustangs next year, with the first delivery to a customer outside Cessna taking place early next year.
Roger Whyte, Cessna’s senior vice president of sales and marketing, told attendees at the first ABACE that Cessna’s presence in the country dates back to 1982. “Including our current orders, Cessna has 60 single-engine propeller-driven aircraft, eight Caravans and 17 Citations [on order or in service] in Asia,” he said.
