France’s Kannad (Booth No. 4541) is unveiling its new 406AF automatic fixed emergency locator transmitter (ELT) here at NBAA’07. The compact device has been developed as a cost-effective option for operators of smaller business aircraft, and the whole package is priced at less than $1,000.
Government officials continue to shine a spotlight on general aviation security. Testifying last week before the House Committee on Homeland Security, DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff said his department would soon unveil a plan to tighten security standards for general aviation aircraft (read: business airplanes) entering the country from overseas.
GDS Aero of Salem, Wis., has FAA-approved Falcon 2000/EX/EASy APU firewalls in stock for STC installation. According to the company, the firewalls offer substantially more resistance to stress cracking than the original equipment with no significant increase in weight. The company emphasizes that the firewalls are fully repairable for the life of the aircraft and its two-piece design significantly reduces labor time.
According to the National Air Transportation Association (NATA), Reps. The royal air force of Oman has signed a $1.5 million contract with SARBE for new generation beacons to replace SARBE 6 beacons by the end of this year. The previous generation beacons will become obsolete on February 1, 2009, as analog transmissions will no longer be monitored by the COSPAS-SARSAT network. Beyond that date only 406MHz signals will be detected.
Eurocopter AS 350-B3, Yellow Pine, Idaho, Aug. 13, 2006–The AS 350 was destroyed and the commercial pilot and three passengers killed when the helicopter crashed 18 miles west of Yellow Pine. The helicopter was being operated by Evergreen Helicopters, of McMinnville, Ore., under contract to the U.S. Forest Service. The helicopter had flown from Krassel Helibase to take a relief fire lookout to Williams Peak lookout tower.
House and Senate bills to require all airport employees with access to secure and sterile areas of an airport to undergo metal detection screening in the same manner as airline passengers is drawing criticism from the National Air Transportation Association (NATA).
The March arrest of two Comair employees and three accomplices for smuggling drugs and guns onto a Delta Air Lines flight from Orlando to San Juan, Puerto Rico understandably raised a lot of questions from the traveling public and, as expected, drew a strong reaction from the Transportation Security Administration.
