Abu Dhabi Autonomous System Investments (ADASI) signed a contract with Piaggio Aero today at the Farnborough Airshow for the Piaggio Aero MPA (multi-role patrol aircraft), a new special-missions surveillance aircraft based on the P.180 Avanti II. The agreement calls for aircraft launch customer ADASI to provide financing for Piaggio to build two prototypes. First flight is scheduled for 2014.
The all-composite Dornier Seastar completed a demo tour of the U.S. and Canada in mid-May, then flew to Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany, for a C-check. The tour will resume after the maintenance is done and will cover Europe, India and Asia. Dornier Seastar said it will announce the upcoming destinations this month. The 12-seat twin-turbine amphibian is already FAA and EASA certified. In the third quarter of this year, Dornier Seastar expects to announce selection of a production site, and under review are locations in Canada, China and India.
Two Avantair pilots and two passengers suffered only minor injuries when their Piaggio Avanti P.180 went off the west side of Runway 18 and flipped over while landing at Flint (Mich.) Bishop International Airport last Wednesday.

Cessna Citation 560XL, Birmingham, Ala., Dec. 13, 2010–The twinjet experienced rudder binding while landing at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth Airport at the conclusion of a Part 135 flight from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey. The Excel landed safely with no injuries to the passenger and two pilots. A post-flight examination of the tail cone revealed ice around the rudder control cables and pulleys.
Italian turboprop manufacturer Piaggio Aero, which recently announced its entry into the Brazilian market, plans to bring its business to Russia as well. The company is seeking Russian certification for its popular P.180 Avanti II twin-engine turboprop, which it expects to begin delivering in the country by April or May of next year.
Chinese Firm Acquires Epic’s Assets
Composite aircraft builder Epic’s plan for three new turboprop and two light jet models collapsed when the Bend, Ore.-based company filed for bankruptcy last year, stranding 12 of its builder-assisted, single-engine turboprop LT kitplanes on the assembly line.
