New Piaggio Aero general manager Eligio Trombetta was in bullish form at EBACE this week as he outlined plans for the new P1XX jet, the next aircraft to join the Italian airframer’s stable. And it seems that the new model will be more of a step up from the existing P.180 Avanti than some had imagined. “The P1XX ideally will go beyond Europe,” he said.

Cessna Citation 560XL, Birmingham, Ala., Dec. 13, 2010–The twinjet experienced rudder binding while landing at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth Airport at the conclusion of a Part 135 flight from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey. The Excel landed safely with no injuries to the passenger and two pilots. A post-flight examination of the tail cone revealed ice around the rudder control cables and pulleys.

Italian turboprop manufacturer Piaggio Aero, which recently announced its entry into the Brazilian market, plans to bring its business to Russia as well. The company is seeking Russian certification for its popular P.180 Avanti II twin-engine turboprop, which it expects to begin delivering in the country by April or May of next year.

Abu Dhabi-based Mubadala Aerospace is aiming to be not only a tier-one supplier of large composite structures to Airbus or Boeing, but also a business jet manufacturer. Yesterday at the Farnborough airshow, Mubadala Aerospace executive director Homaid Al Shemmari told AIN in an exclusive interview that the company intends to build a “business jet-sized aircraft” for entry into service in 2018.

According to an industry source, Piaggio will announce more improvements for the P.180 Avanti twin turboprop before year-end. While the source wouldn’t discuss more details, one of the most obvious areas that Piaggio has yet to address is the Avanti’s unmistakable whine, which has led to its being the only modern turboprop banned under noise restrictions at Santa Monica (Calif.) Airport.

Three new service centers located in Fort Lauderdale, Toronto and Montreal have been added to the Piaggio Aero network. West Star Aviation in East Alton, Ill., received a similar designation two months ago. According to a Piaggio spokesman, an additional center is scheduled to be opened in Calgary, Canada, early next year. Piaggio Aero’s authorized service centers provide factory-authorized maintenance and modification on all Piaggio Avantis.
