Eclipse Aviation selected radar manufacturer Japan Radio to provide a new weather radar that will come standard in the Eclipse 500 very light jet. The original Honeywell radar will be an extra-cost option, but the Japan Radio radar will not be retrofittable to Eclipse 500s already equipped with the Honeywell radars, according to Vern Raburn, Eclipse president and CEO.
Meteorlogix of Minneapolis has launched its MxVision AviationSentry helicopter edition, a weather system giving helicopter pilots a “fast, accurate and comprehensive weather briefing.” The system information includes real-time, high-resolution radar; storm tracking, with details on approaching cells; satellite imagery for identifying areas of low cloud and fog; and forecast maps.
Northrop Grumman has selected the Multi-Function Active Sensor (MFAS) radar from the corporation’s Electronic Systems division to equip its entry in the BAMS competition. The Broad Area Maritime Surveillance program is being run by the U.S. Navy for an unmanned maritime patrol aircraft capable of medium-altitude, long-endurance patrols.
Boeing has revealed a surprise entry for the U.S. Navy’s Broad Area Maritime Surveillance (BAMS) competition. While two rival bids use High-Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), Boeing is adapting the Gulfstream G550 to fly the mission manned or unmanned.
Boeing test pilot Ricardo Traven is flying his usual impressive routine here in the Boeing F/A-18F Super Hornet. The price of this significantly upgraded warplane to the U.S. Navy has been significantly reduced in recent years, so Boeing is bullish about international prospects. Australia recently became the first export customer for the Super, and Boeing is eyeing India, Japan, Greece and Switzerland, among others.
