Dunlop Aircraft Tyres is unveiling the latest products in its commercial aircraft line here at the show (Hall 4 Stand C13). The UK-based firm has introduced a new radial main wheel tire for the French-built ATR 72 regional airliner and has started flight trials for radial main wheel and bias nosewheels on the aircraft’s smaller sibling, the ATR 42.
Having celebrated its 100th birthday last month, Dunlop Aircraft Tyres is working toward the lofty goal of doubling the size of its business, profitably, by 2013. “We made this strategy before the recession and it has become more challenging to the extent that it might push the timeline out,” acknowledged chairman and managing director Ian Edmonson.
The rejected takeoff of a Boeing 777 at approximately 160 knots results in the landing gear absorbing more than one billion joules of energy in a few seconds, according to research recently done by Messier-Bugatti. To put this number in perspective, consider it as the equivalent of supplying energy to the average house (lamps, outdoor lights, refrigerator, television, computer and other appliances) for about 18 hours.
Boeing has awarded Goodyear Tire & Rubber, the world’s largest supplier of aircraft tires, a six-year contract to provide Flight Leader and Flight Radial tires for 737NG aircraft. The “unique body cord shape” of the reduced-weight units is said to minimize stress on takeoff and landing. The tires will equip aircraft to be delivered to operators such as All Nippon, Continental, Ryanair and Southwest.
Michelin still has to decide whether to offer its near-zero-growth tire technology to the Boeing 787 program. The U.S. airframer has already selected the French manufacturer as a 787 supplier, but the tire maker has yet to fully weigh the pros and the cons of employing the NZG material that is already available for the Airbus A380 and A340-500/600 airliners and Dassault Falcon 7X business jet.
