The FAA will present its seventh seminar on domestic RVSM airspace on June 9 and 10 in Atlanta. The goal of the seminar is to provide regulatory and procedural information on DRVSM. Specific topics include DRVSM program overview, aircraft and operator approval processes, safety and monitoring considerations and ATC programs and policies.

Elliott Aviation of Moline, Ill., has received an FAA STC RVSM group approval for the Beechjet 400 and MU-300 Diamond. The RVSM solution uses the Beechjet/Diamond’s native Honeywell avionics suite. A Honeywell AZ-252 advanced air-data computer, AM-250 barometric altimeter, BA-250 barometric altimeter display and AL-800 altitude preselector/alerter replace the existing non-compliant Honeywell air data/altimetry.

Avcon Industries of Olathe, Kan., has obtained group approval for its RVSM upgrade for the Learjet 24 and 25, including models with various wing modifications. The retail price of the modification is $156,975, including a functional test flight.

Buoyed by strong sales of its RVSM cockpit equipment to airlines and business aircraft operators, Exton, Pa.-based Innovative Solutions & Support (IS&S) this year looks on pace to post record revenue and profits. While that’s certainly good news for the upstart avionics maker, it doesn’t mean that it is too soon to start questioning what the company will do for an encore.

Recent guidance from the FAA advises pilots that beginning next January 20, when RVSM is scheduled to be implemented in the U.S., ATC will start using the flight-plan equipment block information to issue or deny clearance into RVSM airspace. For both FAA and ICAO flight plans, the letter “W” will signify that an operator has RVSM authorization. Questions about all aspects of RVSM can be directed to the FAA at (202) 863-2175.

Compliance with the ICAO requirement for aircraft on virtually all extended international operations to be equipped with an automatic 406-MHz ELT leads off a
full dozen equipment compliance requirements over the next year. Those who follow our monthly “Compliance Countdown” column  will notice this month a sea of items highlighted in red. This means compliance with the requirements for these items comes due in the next 12 months.

As Stevens Aviation’s Memphis, Tenn. facility nears certification of a Universal EFI-890R synthetic vision glass panel in the Learjet 25, the company is embarking on a similar project–with added features–for the Learjet 35 series. The Stevens Aviation “Learjet 35 Forever” modification will include the EFI-890R avionics, Raisbeck Engineering’s ZR Lite and locker systems, a fresh interior and Avcon’s RVSM solution.
